Celist — Character Background (Feedback Welcome)

Celist is one of the protagonists in my dark heroic fantasy project. Her story deals with themes of sacrifice, corruption, and redemption. Although she returns as an undead character, her arc is about resisting darkness rather than embracing it.

Name: Celist

Age: Dead (physically appears mid‑20s)

Race / Origin: Human (formerly)

Current Status: Archlich

Appearance

Celist wears a fitted black leather dress and a black traveling cape suited for long, lonely roads. An onyx pendant hangs at her throat — a soul container that glows an unnatural green when active. Her movements are unnervingly smooth; when she walks, she seems to glide just above the ground, as if gravity is only a suggestion.

Personality

Kind at her core, but hesitant. Celist is still learning how to inhabit her new existence with confidence. She wants to do the right thing, but she’s constantly second‑guessing herself, unsure where the line is between “undead pragmatism” and “sliding into monstrosity.”

Strengths

  • Regeneration (powerful but unpredictable)

  • Control over low‑level undead

  • Ability to destroy undead

  • A passive fear aura that intensifies under stress

Flaws

  • Her soul container can be exploited by higher‑level undead

  • Involuntary vampiric regeneration that activates when she’s badly damaged

  • Still only apprentice‑level in magic despite her new form

Magic / Skills

A hybrid of pyromancy (her original discipline) and necromancy (a side effect of her reanimation). She’s talented but untrained, and her magic often reflects her emotional state.

Backstory Summary

Celist was sacrificed during a summoning ritual orchestrated by her brother, Maleric, who believed her soul was necessary to bring the Forgotten One into the world. Her husband, Baldwin, attempted to save her but failed. The ritual collapsed when her soul was claimed by the pendant instead of the summoning, causing a magical explosion that devastated the region.

Where She Is at the Start of the Story

She awakens in the crypt beneath the ruined chapel of Blue Pine — thirty years after her death, with no time having passed for her.

What She Wants

  • To reconcile with her past

  • To confront her murder and understand why it happened

  • To find a way to end her undeath, one way or another

What She Fears

  • Being trapped in her current state forever

  • Isolation

  • Inadequacy

  • Becoming evil or losing her mind to undeath

Why She Matters to the Plot

Celist’s resurrection is part of the inciting incident. She is one of the story’s central protagonists, and her existence destabilizes the plans of both the living and the undead. Her arc ties directly into the world’s history, the cult’s goals, and Baldwin’s personal conflict.
