Our society has a funny relationship with improving oneself.
On the one hand we are encouraged to draft resolutions for each new year. Goals that we are supposed to strive to achieve because our future possibilities seem endless.
On the other hand, we have heard and/or have made the joke that our resolutions haven't even made it a month into the new year. Sometimes not even a week! Almost as if we expect people to fail and want to encourage them with humor. This can work in some cases, though I can't shake the feeling that over the years, this can make us more cynical than we should be if we want to truly be better.
I won't offer the same joke about any resolutions you may have. I will say that you will fail in them. Sooner or later, we being human, will fail at keeping these commitments. However, that is to be expected and planned for, not used as an excuse to quit.
As you think about your New Year resolutions for 2022, I encourage you to think about how you will deal with the times you drop the ball. Will you recognize the reasons for the lapse? Will you adapt yourself and perhaps your surroundings to be more encouraging to your new desired habit?
The more you think about these things now, the easier it will be to get back up and try again. After all, to paraphrase Rocky, life isn't about not getting hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
This made me think about that Churchill quote: "Success consists of going from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm" 😅
