The PowWow

Ok, this was my very first character I started with in 2010 when the game launched, but I didn't write this until much later. I dreamed up a what-if scenario and went with it. Hope you enjoy.

Background:

Robert Maynard is a peculiar case in time travel. Instead of taking a short cut and traveling through some kind of anomaly, he took the long way around. SFC Maynard was a soldier serving in the US Army during one of the many wars of the first half of the 21st century. His tank was hit while conducting combat operations in Eastern Europe which resulted in him suffering severe injuries that required evacuation to a hospital for treatment. He was placed into an experimental stasis pod and evacuated to a hospital ship where he began the trek back home. Unfortunately, the ship was sunk in transit after striking a mine and he was thought lost. An air pocket in the compartment where his pod was located prevented that part of the ship from flooding, and the power supply in his stasis pod, in what is still a mystery, managed to keep it operational and preserve him in the icy depths of the North Atlantic. Early in 2401, the wreck, buried under decades of sediment, was rediscovered along with Robert's stasis pod by Federation archeologists.

Initially thought to be deceased, medical personnel discovered that he was still very much alive albeit with severe injuries and burns over much of his body. 25th century medical technology was easily able to heal his injuries, but while his body was made whole again, his mind was another story. The combination of severe PTSD from his time in combat, that to him had taken place only recently, and the realization that all his family and friends were long dead was almost too much to bear for him, and he made at least one suicide attempt in the short time after he was revived. He spent the next year in psychological care facilities while Federation psychologists worked to help him adjust and accept what had taken place. He was eventually given a clean bill of health and was released from the facility to begin his new life in the Federation. He traveled the Federation for a time, but with the breakdown in diplomatic relations with the Klingon Empire, Robert knew that the outbreak of war was only a matter of time.

Robert began a new career in MACO. He initially entered as an enlisted man, but after demonstrating tactical proficiency in small unit tactics, he was fast tracked through officer candidate school and given a commission. He served in several frontline battles against the Klingons and Gorn where he demonstrated his unorthodox methods against opposing forces. His leadership abilities quickly earned him the respect of his peers and immediate supervisors as well as his enemies, but while he got results on the battlefield, not all his superiors appreciated his methods.

Robert was transferred twice to different battalions because of conflicts with senior MACO leadership over his battlefield conduct. His use of modified 21st century infantry tactics proved brutally efficient, and whether due to jealousy over the praises he was receiving or because of a genuine concern over his battlefield conduct, complaints from several of his fellow officers began to mount resulting in an official military tribunal.

After an impassioned defense, Robert was acquitted of all charges, but the damage had already been done. Robert no longer trusted his fellow officers, and he was quickly ostracized by the senior leaders that felt he had embarrassed and personally insulted them during his trial. Robert took a leave of absence from MACO, and while on a vacation to Risa, he encountered a Starfleet captain that convinced him to apply for Starfleet. After she called in some favors without his knowledge, he was accepted into the academy's officer transfer program.

Now an Ensign, Robert began his new career in Starfleet and quickly proved himself a capable officer. While he struggled with certain academic portions at the academy, he excelled tactically, and he graduated with a respectable ranking in his class. His first assignment was to the Miranda class USS Fletcher as a tactical officer on the bridge.

The Fletcher, responding to a distress call from the Vega system, came under attack by the Borg where her captain and most of her bridge crew were killed in the assault. Robert took command and saved his ship and what was left of the crew from assimilation before help arrived. After a debrief, Robert was awarded command of the Fletcher.  He progressed through the ranks commanding vessels of various types, but cruisers have always been his preference. He currently commands the Sovereign Class USS Tennessee which recently underwent a refit reclassifying it as a Noble Class Battlecruiser sub-type.

Psychological Profile:

It is extremely rare to encounter a 21st century Earth human this far removed from their own time, especially under the circumstances that Robert was forced to endure. These humans can also be very frustrating subjects to work with, and despite efforts to integrate them into modern society, they still carry the mistrust and cynicism for their fellow humans that was common during that time. Robert is no exception to this and with his 21st century military background, these traits are dialed up to eleven.

Robert has made a great effort to integrate into Federation society, but he is much more comfortable on the bridge of a starship where he doesn't have to interact with Federation civilians nearly as often. He combined his past leadership experience from his time as a NCO, his time in MACO, and what he learned in the academy into a very unique command style that often raises eyebrows with Starfleet Command.

Despite his less desirable traits, Captain Maynard is one of the most loyal and selfless officers in Starfleet, often putting himself in harm’s way for others, especially members of his crew. His family and friends have long been dead, and there are no surviving records to indicate if he has any living descendants. He chooses to fill that gap with the men and women that serve under him. He considers them to be his family. He is fiercely defensive of them, and he has a particular soft spot for the enlisted members of his crew. He has made it a point to learn their names, and he tries to have a meal with them in the ship's mess hall once a month.

Robert approaches problems much differently than other Starfleet captains. He considers the rule book to be more like guidelines, so he will often bend or break the rules as necessary to get results. Often, he will take actions without consulting Starfleet first if he thinks he has a more efficient method for doing things than what he knows Starfleet will recommend. This has gotten him admonished several times as his disregard for the rules has almost resulted in disaster on several occasions. While his unorthodox methods carry risk and often test the patience of his superiors, he brings a way of thinking and an approach to solving problems that never fails to get results, even if they can sometimes be messy.
