The PowWow

I wanted a Vulcan character for my lineup, and I chose to make one from the Original Era setting when the Agents of Yesterday expansion came out some years back. I did some research on what was considered canon for Vulcans, so I tried to keep her grounded in that, but also writing a unique Vulcan character that didn't follow the stereotypes of either having no emotion or all the emotions. I hope you enjoy.

Background:

Satemi was born in the coastal region of Raal on Vulcan in 2237.  Her mother was a teacher to Vulcan children and her father served in the Vulcan Defense Force.  Satemi experienced a typical Vulcan childhood.  She received a standard education, learned about the teachings of Surak, and was betrothed at a very young age, but she did not follow the same path as most other Vulcans such as those from the Lyr Zor clan.

Satemi completed most of the Vulcan education, but she never completed the Norn-La-Hal or the Venlinahr training before leaving Vulcan to see other parts of the Federation. This meant that she did not attain the final state of logic and reason that Vulcans so highly valued, and that put her at odds with other Vulcans as Satemi was considered by many of them to be less disciplined than those who had achieved the final state of Venlinahr.

Satemi lived on Earth for a time and in 2266 applied for and was accepted into Starfleet Academy as a tactical officer which further put her at odds with other Vulcans.  Pursuing a career in Starfleet and living amongst humans at this time was still considered to be quite controversial among the Vulcan people, and such a decision typically resulted in the offending Vulcan being ostracized by many of their peers.

Upon graduation from the academy, Satemi's first assignment was to the Pioneer Class USS Bunker Hill.  Taking command after a Klingon attack that left most of the bridge crew incapacitated, Satemi skillfully maneuvered the Bunker Hill and fought back against the Klingons ensuring her ship's survival until reinforcements could arrive.  She was given command of the Bunker Hill afterwards, and she commanded it for a short time before being reassigned to take command of the Constitution Class USS Excalibur.

Satemi served with distinction as the captain of the Excalibur, and in 2271, would participate in a Federation fleet action against a Klingon battle fleet that would come to be known as the Battle of Caleb IV.  Federation forces held their own during the battle, but the sudden arrival of Klingon reinforcements led by Kor turned the tide sharply against the Federation.  The Federation ships were all disabled and held by tractor beams, and Kor demanded the surrender of the task force.

Temporal agent, Daniels, having previously worked with Satemi to stop Na'kuhl incursions, detected temporal activity on Kor's ship consistent with Na'kuhl readings and beamed Satemi and a small team over to investigate.  After setting explosive charges, Kor was discovered conversing the Na'kuhl operatives and their mysterious benefactor.  After a short fight, Satemi's team beamed out and detonated the charges freeing Excalibur from Kor's tractor beam.

Satemi fought valiantly against Kor's ships.  Her efforts freed the task force and allowed them to escape, but the Excalibur's warp drive was disabled forcing her into a fight to the death.  After a protracted battle against Kor's forces, Excalibur was destroyed with all hands assumed lost, but Daniels managed to transport Satemi and some of her officers and crew off the ship before its destruction.

Having been declared dead by the Federation, Satemi and her crew were given new identities and started new lives.  Satemi resumed her service with Starfleet, but despite orders from the Department of Temporal Investigations advising her to move on, she tried to reconnect with her parents and her mate.

As she expected, her mate had moved on and started a family with another Vulcan woman after he received the news of her passing.  She chose not to interfere with his life and moved on herself, but she still traveled to Vulcan in secret to contact her parents.  Now approaching 200 years old, they were pleased to see that she had survived, but they also understood that her contacting them was a violation of the orders she had received.  They bid her their farewell and advised her to move on with her new life and avoid contacting them in the future unless necessary.

Satemi left Vulcan and refocused on her career in Starfleet.  She was given command of the Chimera class destroyer, USS Laffey.  She was an effective destroyer captain, but Starfleet’s new classes of carrier starships really caught her interest.  She requested to command one of the new Jupiter class carriers and was given the USS Midway, but she soon became unsatisfied with its mobility.  Not giving up on carriers, Satemi applied for one of Starfleet's new escort carriers and was granted command of the new Typhon class USS Anzio where she now works to refine and develop new strategies and tactics for Starfleet's carrier fleet and the new Valkyrie and Valor classes of fighters.

Psychological Profile:

Outsiders unfamiliar with Vulcan culture consider all Vulcans to fall into the stereotype associated with their race, and while that assumption is not entirely unjustified, not all Vulcans are devout followers of Surak's teachings either.  Satemi is like a typical Vulcan in many ways, but she never completed the final stages of her Vulcan education and chose to leave Vulcan in her 30s which is a much earlier age than most other Vulcans.

Satemi could best be compared to the former science officer of the USS Cerritos, T'Lyn.  She defers to logic over emotions and displays the mannerisms consistent with most Vulcans.  However, she finds living and working with humans to be more agreeable, and she has developed a fascination with studying their behaviors.  Another aspect of her personality she shares with T'Lyn is a sort of dry sense of humor, and she will at times, make subtle jokes or funny observations with the emotionless and expressionless delivery that is characteristic of Vulcans.

Some unusual behavior exhibited by Satemi is her ship's uniform regulations and her referring to her ship as "she" rather than "it."  Current Starfleet uniform regulations allow captains the freedom to set their own uniform standards (within reason) onboard their ships, so Satemi choose to keep the 2260-2270s era Starfleet uniforms as the standard uniform for her vessel as her way of honoring her past.  These actions suggest that she may tend to develop a slight emotional attachment to certain inanimate objects she considers to be important which is almost unheard of among Vulcans.

Her command style is typical of Vulcans, and when she is in the captain's chair, it's all business.  She will allow for feedback from her bridge officers when it comes to important decisions, but she will not humor that feedback if it does not have at least one foot based in some sound logic.  She does, however, allow her fighter squadron commanders extraordinary leeway when it comes to snap decisions during combat as she recognizes that she cannot question their judgement in the heat of the moment, but this does not preclude her from analyzing their actions during AARs and questioning those decisions, both good and bad.
