Background:

Nicholas is yet another time displaced refugee from the 23rd century.  He started his career in Starfleet at the outbreak of the Federation/Klingon War that began with the disastrous Battle of the Binary Stars.  He served admirably aboard the Walker Class light cruiser, USS Fletcher.  His service was cut short however, during the Starbase 1 defense against the forces of Klingon matriarch, J'ula.

Using a mycelial based weapon derived from stolen Federation technology, J'ula created a violent temporal rift that pulled several of J'ula's ships along with J'ula herself and the USS Fletcher into the distortion and deposited them into the year 2410.

Thought lost, Nicholas and the crew of the Fletcher were declared KIA until the Fletcher's arrival in the 25th century.  After a debrief and some time to acclimate to their jump forward in time, Nicholas and his crew were permitted to resume their careers in Starfleet.

Psychological Profile:

Nicholas comes from a family that has dedicated itself to service for generations, and he can trace his lineage directly back to US Army General Creighton Abrams from Earth's 20th century.  However, with humanity's jump to the stars, the Abrams family traded in their tanks for starships and have served honorably in Starfleet ever since.

Every generation of Nicholas' family has served with distinction, and while Nicholas is enthusiastic about continuing this tradition, he sometimes finds living up to that legacy to be daunting.  Nicholas' displacement into the 25th century was a particularly stressful event for him as he considers this to be a significant career setback.  This, in addition to the realization that everyone he knew and cared about is long dead has seen his consumption of alcohol increase significantly.  While this is not a regular occurrence, on those rare occasions when he does drink, it is usually to become intoxicated, usually alone, and usually in his quarters.

Nicholas was able to successfully reconnect with his family's descendants but having had no children of his own when he was lost, he has no direct descendants in his family to reconnect with.  This has caused Nicholas to become singularly focused on his career in Starfleet.

Upon his return to Starfleet, Nicholas was given a new command, the Excelsior class USS Salem.  He had seen very early design concepts of the Excelsior when he was at the academy, so he was very excited to get the opportunity to command one of his own, even if they were no longer one of Starfleet's ships of the line.

One point of contention with Nicholas that he has yet to work through fully are his feelings towards Klingons.  For Nick, the brutality of the first war with the Klingon Empire is still recent.  Seeing Klingons as allies is particularly difficult for him, so he usually avoids diplomatic situations that involve Klingons if possible.

One may think that Nicholas' command style is something resembling Admiral Jellico, but this is untrue.  He values the input from his officers and will take their recommendations into account before making a decision that puts them into harm's way.  He requires his crew to look and act professional while on duty though, and he has them run frequent combat drills to maintain readiness.  While he may appear like a task master to an outsider, his crew respects him and sees him as caring and compassionate towards their needs even if he is a bit stern at times.
